Barry Caland is red hot.

Caland fired a three-over 75 on a blustery Sunday at Whitewater Golf Course to capture the District Open with a 145 total, his third win of the season, following victories at the Thunder Bay Country Club Invitational and the annual Pro-Am.

It gave him eight majors -- two District Amateurs, two District Opens and four Strathcona Invitationals -- four less than record-holder Trevor Jones, and gives him a career double major slam, a feat only accomplished by Jones.

“That’s pretty cool. It’s been on my mind for maybe four or five years, and to get it out the way (is great). There’s pressure every year. I think about it before the tournament starts. I’ve been playing well, and before July 1, this was the No. 1 goal for me to try to win this year, and it’s a good feeling.”

Caland, 37, said the changing nature of the tournament made it difficult to prepare for from year to year.

“In the last three tournaments I’ve played it’s been three different formats. It was match play, then the Pro/Am style and now stroke play. I’ve had some good results, but maybe I just haven’t practiced much early in the year,” said Caland, who heads south for the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship next week.

“With going to Toronto on Sunday I’ve been working my tail off to get my game in shape and I felt good coming into the weekend.”

Caland, Hank Wilke and Damon Crack, playing out of the B-flight, were tied entering the second 18 of the two-day event, which started Saturday at Chapples Golf Club and concluded at Whitewater the following day.

Wilke held the early advantage on Sunday, taking a one-shot lead over Caland and two over Bill Shewchuk after eight holes.

But disaster struck on the ninth when Wilke pounded his drive into the woods, leading to an eventual eight. Caland, knowing the lead was his to take, didn’t exactly pounce on the opportunity, taking a lost ball of his own before sinking a 35-footer for double bogey, good enough for a one-shot lead.

He never really looked back. Shewchuk tied him on 11 with a birdie from the edge of the forest, but the southpaw collapsed the rest of the way, winding up with a final round 87 on a day when the average score in A flight ballooned to more than 82.

Caland, playing on his home course, birdied 12 and 13 and cruised home, his 75 matched only by second-place finisher Robert Cumming, who carded a two-day total 148.

“He’s got it going right now,” said Cumming, last year’s District Open champion. “He’s got a couple of wins this year, so what else can you say, good for him.”

Rollie Turrie finished third at 150, while Eugene Prystanski, playing from the C flight, took fourth at 151. Wilke, who shot 82 on Sunday, rounded out the top 5 at 152.
